Accutane Lawsuit 2010 Update

Accutane Lawsuit 2010 Update

Patients affected by inflammatory bowel disease continue to look at their legal options including filing an Accutane lawsuit. Accutane is a drug that was developed to treat cases of acne, and severe acne, for patients that have not seen any success with more traditional forms of acne treatment. The drug has been incredibly effective for the ailment that is was designed to treat. Unfortunately, for a number of acne patients, Accutane has prompted the development of something far worse than the condition it was designed to treat. The severeAccutane long term side effects have proven far more damaging to the health of patients than acne could ever be.

In response to these severe side effects, lawsuits have been filed on behalf of patients all over the country in the courts of New Jersey. Atlantic City, New Jersey, is the home base to Roche Pharmaceuticals, the makers and distributors of Accutane. Juries have already handed out millions in damages and compensation to Accutane patients afflicted with these severe side effects.

Accutane and Crohn’s Disease

One of the most common serious Accutane side effects years later is Crohn’s disease. This disease is classified as an Inflammatory Bowel Disease, which strikes the gastrointestinal and digestive systems of patients. Crohn’s disease is considered the worst of these Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, if only for the chronic and ongoing pain that patients suffer through. Other Inflammatory Bowel Diseases do pose more danger to patients – ulcerative colitis can actually be fatal in certain cases – but Crohn’s disease is thought to be a more common side effect of Accutane use.

Crohn’s disease is an autoimmune disorder that inflames sections of a patient’s intestinal tract with pain and diarrhea. The pain and inflammation will subside after a time, but it always flares up again, with little warning. This can lead to a frustrating and painful cycle for patients. Crohn’s disease is a chronic disorder, meaning that there is no cure for it, and there is little in the way of effective medical treatment for it either.

Accutane and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Accutane is also linked to the onset of Irritable Bowel Syndrome in patients who have used the acne drug. Irritable Bowel Syndrome involves an acute pain in the lower abdominal tract, along with pain during bowel movements and general inflammation flaring up and down throughout a patient’s gastrointestinal tract. As with Crohn’s disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a chronic disease for which there is no cure, and little in the way of effective medical treatment. This means that Accutane patients who develop Irritable Bowel Syndrome as a result of taking the acne drug face a lifetime of pain, inflammation and all manner of problems with their digestive systems.

Accutane and Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is perhaps the most serious of Accutane side effects (aside from the link to increased suicidal thoughts in adolescent patients). Of the types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, ulcerative colitis is the only one that presents a high risk of death if complications ensue following diagnosis. Ulcerative colitis affects the lower intestinal tract of the patient, and can spread through the rectum. Those afflicted with ulcerative colitis suffer through a chronic and painful disorder with their lower intestines, which can make life exceedingly difficult.
